LP390 - Practicum for Innovative Engineering

LEAP organized the LP390 program at Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai, The program aimed to equip faculty members with hands-on experience in product innovation.

Day 1 – Exploring Problems & Products

The first day introduced participants to LP390 and its experiential approach to innovative engineering. Participants formed teams and explored everyday challenges through the “Things That Bug Me” activity, followed by sessions on visual thinking and reverse engineering. Through hands-on reverse engineering of an electro-mechanical product, participants learned to analyse product components, mechanisms, and design decisions. The day concluded with an introduction to ESP32, including basic connections and hands-on experimentation.

Day 2 – Building Connected Solutions

Day two focused on developing practical skills with ESP32, including working with actuators and establishing Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Participants applied these skills to build an automation system, gaining experience in integrating hardware, programming, and communication. The sessions also introduced AI tools for engineering, design-option evaluation, and problem selection. Through ideation activities, participants began connecting technology and design thinking to real-life problems and potential engineering solutions.

Day 3 – From Problem to Product

The final day focused on applying the learning through a structured Product Design Methodology. Participants developed and refined solutions for selected real-life problems and presented their designs, receiving feedback on their ideas and approaches. The programme also covered guidelines for delivering similar experiential learning activities. The FDP concluded with reflections, faculty feedback, and closure, highlighting the importance of combining design, reverse engineering, embedded systems, and innovation to develop practical solutions.
